Horsham under-9s enjoyed success at their home festival with the Lions winning the age group and the Tigers playing well against some strong A teams.

Horsham under-9s entered two teams, the Lions and the Tigers, for their home rugby festival. The Lions started off with a tough fixture against Dorking, a team that they drew with a few weeks earlier. The boys started the festival the way they needed to with some great defending turning in to attack, which produced a well-deserved 3-1 victory. A comfortable 6-1 victory over Lewes followed with the Horsham Lions demonstrating good passing skills which were complimented by the visiting coaches. In the two final games of the group stage the Lions didn’t concede a try as the strong defence led by team captain Morgan Purnell simply didn’t give the opposition a chance to run at them. This delivered a 3-0 victory over Sutton & Epsom and a 2-0 win against Worthing.

With four out of four wins in the group stage, the Horsham Lions qualified for the final against Cranleigh, who had pulled off some good results themselves in the other group. Horsham Lions were quick out of the blocks again to get a 2-0 lead and although Cranleigh did then make it over the Horsham line that was a close as it got as Horsham came through as 4-1 winners to take the title.

The Horsham Lions team was Harry Bostock, Daniel Brand, Oliver Colombo, Nathan Coward, Jude Harding, Liam Hughes, James ‘Dark’ Knight, Morgan Purnell, Finlay Rutherford, Tom Sanders and Sam Thurston.

The Tigers team faced an uphill task as they played A teams from four strong clubs – Chichester, Cranleigh, East Grinstead and Pulborough. However, the boys showed a lot of commitment and no little skill in poor weather conditions to win one of the games with two out of the three losses being close.

The Tigers squad was James Andrews, Finlay Conway, Kye Hill, James ‘light’ Knight, Brandon Masters, Rhys Merola, Freddie Muggeridge, Ethan Stoner-Gray, Mason Taylor and Ruben Weide.
