This morning the Coolhurst micro climate brought winds in from the east and overcast skies. It was dry though and this bode well for the style of running rugby this team is developing at pace this season. It’s all starting to click and there is no better example of this this season.
Of course, with pace and guile of the Under 14 backs is built on good solid platform built by the no compromise edge of our eight heroes in the pack. These work horses provided dominance scrum after scrum today, there is no better sight on a rugby pitch than eight players in green packed down and powering forward, the Uckfield pack in disarray. We won our own ball in the lineouts too, a tricky place to operate even in this arena where they aim to be largely uncontested but kept on the rails with words from the Referee.
Both sides had success in powering up the middle of the pitch players supporting at close quarters, recycling ball, both sides made ground this way, both sides had ball turned over when support was available. Horsham scored tries from this, but also capitalised after punching up a couple of times and then moving the ball wide and looking to go coast to coast with it.
Two tries from Kinnley and one from Dylan from put Horsham into a commanding 19-0 lead after 23 minutes, however Uckfield came back at them, and maybe Horsham lost focus as they conceded a try from a Uckfield player running powerfully up the center and over the try line.
Wise half-time words were needed from Coach Richard and were clearly delivered. Horsham, reenergized, created a super scoring opportunity for George scoring near the posts. Horsham switched on and still hungry. Uckfield could not answer with points in the second half, they fought valiantly though and never gave up, a point acknowledged to them in the clubhouse by Coach Richard. Further tries from Kinnley and Dylan sealed the win. Make no mistake this was a team effort, substitutions slotted in seamlessly and the vocal Horsham supporters must also be a factor. Huge thanks must of course go to the coaches led by Richard and the managers.
