With the first league game of the season being scheduled very early, there were concerns that we would not be ready to face Lewes who had defeated us in our final encounter last season. With the bragging rights, and psychological edge with the visitors Horsham took the field with a real determination to put the record straight.
The game could not have started any better with the home side receiving the kickoff, maintaining possession and working through multiple phases to score in the corner. Any notion that it would go on to be an easy day were soon dispelled with Lewes defending manfully and holding out attack after attack before Horsham eventually scored their second try. Once again Lewes came back with real determination and a period of possession saw them score a try of their own. Horsham started to ruck more aggressively and produce quicker ball to dominate the remainder of the first half going into half time with a 25-5 advantage.
The second half started with Lewes again throwing everything at the home side, an improved defensive organisation and effort saw Lewes cough up the ball several times in midfield and the fight started to go out of the visitors. The superior fitness of the home side started to pay dividends and the fantastic work up front provided good quick ball for the backs who had a great day and really started to carve the opposition up.
Lewes did create one more chance which to their credit they took well, but the game was already secured and the 46-10 final score was a fair reflection of the game and reward for all the hard work the boys have put in over the summer and in pre season.
Next weekend sees another home league fixture against Hove.
