We had for the first time in recent games, a firm pitch with dry conditions and we hoped the opportunity to play our "normal game" in competing at the breakdown, a few battle axes and out to the wings would pay dividends. Lewes however had other ideas. We started well with the first score but it was evident that Lewes were very strong at the breakdown and we seemed to be losing a lot of ball on the counter ruck, when going into contact (often alone) and as we sought to avoid this by offloading more ball close to or when going into the tackle, more ball was spilt and possession lost. It crossed my mind that we simply just missed the mud and the rain. But I was pretty sure, given it was mothers day, a deluge would not be appreciated even if it did lift our game.
As a result the score went back and forth as we were unable to dominate and hold possession, with the Lewes no 12 being effective in making ground on the counter attack, whenever he had the ball.
There were strong performances with Tom Edvane solid at full back and Horsham's Man of the Match as a result. Good solid runs and phased play resulted in 19-19 at half time. However it proved not to be our day this time as Lewes managed to edge two scores ahead late into the second half.
Nevertheless, as we reflect on the season, HEG which last year finished 3rd in League 3, are unrecognisable this year moving up 8 places, finishing 5th out of 10 in League 2 competing against A / First teams. This is a great performance with coaches proud all round as should all the players in the squad. We now have many players knocking on the doors of Horsham A positions which will make Gary's and the coaches job on selection even harder - and that's exactly how it should be.
Let's enjoy the tour....Devon awaits.
