With some boys having their first touch of a rugby ball since Christmas it showed with a slow start against a very good Worthing side. It was back to bad habits -dropping off tackles, static back line, poor support play and our rucking (which has beed excellent all season) deserted us.
Despite this we took an early lead with a great break by Sam Minto, unfortunately there was nobody supporting him as it would have been a certain try, but we recycled the ball, Jordan Bell had a mazy run through the Worthing defence to set up Sam Wheeler to score in the corner.
Ben Murphy scored a second try with his usual direct strong running at the Worthing defence which was converted by Josh Medley. 0-12.
But Worthing always threatened - their rucking & turnover ball created opportunities and with this posession they spread the ball wide for their number 13 to score 2 quick converted trys making the score 14-12 at half time.
At the start of the second half Coach Jones made a number of changes to enable all the squad have a run out, but Worthing were full of confidence and their big number 18 ran through our defence unoppossed to score with the conversion hitting the post. 19-12.
The boys had to dig deep & another unconverted Ben Murphy try reduced the deficit to 19-17. This was followed by a great run by James Purbrick to beat 3 tackles and score under the posts. Suprisingly the conversion was missed but the score remained 19-22.
Worthing always looked dangerous and scored another try with 5 minutes remaining - score 24-22.
Horsham picked up their game and with one minute to go after a number of phases in the Worthing 22 Craig Dent scored in the corner & Matt Allen converting with a brilliant kick from the touchline.
24-29 Final Score.
We have only had 29 points scored against us in 5 league games so it shows how hard Worthing pushed us to score their 24 points.
Hopefully this has now blown away those cobwebs after a month of no rugby & we can retain our focus for the crunch top of the table clash against Midhurst next week.
