Strongest game from the Green Army saw us beat our rivals from Haywards Heath 27-19 and we can now go on Christmas Break as number 3 in League 1.

During the warm up we noticed that Haywards Heath’s backs had very quick hands yet their forwards didn’t look too scary. However, we again started slowly and found us behind 7-0 much too fast. But suddenly our backs were the ones with quick hands and with two quick tries from our fast winger John Matthews - who had lost extra weight during the week - we were ahead 7-10. Haywards Heath managed to get back and it was 14-10 when the rain started pouring down. Game on and with the increasing mud the match could go anyway now.

At half-time Bigmouth Stroke Again – so much that the highly esteemed chairman referee wasn’t too pleased with the language, though all that was really done was spelling Haywards Heath with a capital S.

Second half started as first half should have and we got the lead back with an impressive try from Sam Minto. Our fly-half Matt Allen suddenly realised that he was wearing his brand new expensive Green Army boots and therefore kicked over the conversion. Just after that he made the right decision when taking a penalty kick and we were now ahead 14-20. Sam Minto then walked the ball over the try line with a big smile on his face and it didn’t matter that Haywards Heath got a consolation try in the last play.

With two tries from John and Sam respectively, Matt kicking like Dan Carter, Ryan and Callum both strong as an ox, Ollie, George and Aaron tackling like that’s all they have ever done, Alex, Callum and Ben keeping Lewis busy on the wing, Craig, Harrison and Josh screaming from the side line and Rasmus and Tom maintaining their shorts white and clean, it was still James Purbrick that stood out and got Man of the Match and showed everybody why he was our Sussex Boy.

Haywards Heath is a very strong side yet on the day forgot to pass the ball out to their cold wings, like we forgot when we were U14, and therefore kept charging forward through the middle where our exceptionally strong forwards now rule! This made our win even more impressive and who would have thought that we would be 3rd in this league half way through? Well to be fair, I did…………….….and if you believe that, you believe anything!
