It's a tough job being U17 in the Colts league, you can sometimes go many weeks without playing especially when foul weather messes with the fixtures and that's what this lot has had to deal with in recent weeks. Despite this, their commitment to training has remained high and the cohesion gained from this was very much on show today. Only been one player left this season and to be able to field a full u17 team in March is something not many clubs in Sussex can do.
It's also not often you see a boy playing his first game of rugby at a colt and it was immensely fulfilling to see Owen Reeves play his first game of rugby today, starting on the wing and capping a memorable afternoon by leading the team shout at the end of the game. Zak Charman stepped in as Captain and although a little pensive about the task did a great job, in particular marshalling the line out and issuing clear messages to the team during breaks in play ably supported by his more senior players.
We spoke before the match about how the lads who are already regulars in the Colts team will need to fill the gaps left by departing older players and they took on that challenge with a relish which bodes very well for next season. Notably, with others stepping up and understanding the jobs and roles they need to perform for the team's success.
Next week is away at Dorking.
