Horsham Lions produce a fantastic display of fast attacking play as they beat East Grinstead 3’s 61-0 at Coolhurst.

The Lions showed what they are capable of in racking up nine tries and not allowing East Grinstead any chance to score. This result has now sent out a message to the league that the Lions are to not be underestimated by opposition. Lions came out of the starting blocks the fastest with returning lock Carl Harman scoring the opening try with a powerful run after good inter-play from the forwards. After this Josh Chalk who had a good day with the boot slotted a penalty goal, soon after the penalty goal the Lions were back on the front again with a good display of hands down the left side with Kyle Fuller scoring in the corner after showing good pace and footwork. Declan Nwachukwu, a Horsham colt scored a try with his first touch of the ball after another show of handling by the Horsham forwards and backs with a brilliant sweeping move. The final score of the first half was a copy of the second try with Kyle Fuller going in for his second try of the game after good hands by the backs to push Horsham’s score at half time to 30-0.

The second half started with a bang with powerful backrower Jordan Smith going over the try line for the fifth try after busting through the East Grinstead defence. The next score came from a brilliant outside break by winger Nwachukwu showing his class with a well time pass to James Layzell who ran a good support line to go over for a try. Horsham’s next try came from veteran winger Dan Bourne who raced in for the try in the left hand corner after a good blindside attacking move by the Lions. Nwachukwu again showed his electric pace with another score with fantastic chase after a kick by Chalk with Nwachukwu winning the race to the ball to pick it up and then dot it down for the score. Smith put the finishing touch to a fantastic display by the Horsham Lions with a long range run to score underneath the post after breaking the East Grinstead defence again.

Lions team manager Andy Layzell was overjoyed with his team’s performance, ‘the boys were fantastic! We set out a clear game plan of using the pace and the good handling that our team has. I was impressed with our defence with us shutting out East Grinstead. To be fair to East Grinstead they didn’t make life easy for us, we had to work hard to earn the scores we got. This performance was our most complete performance of the season. There was number of players who put in a season’s performance but my joint man of the match is Jordan Smith and Kyle Fairs who both showed their power in attack and in defence, whilst also showing good ball handling when needed.’

The Lions next match is against Sussex Police on the 31st January.
