Horsham Lions hosted local rivals Barns Green to Coolhurst for what was expected to be a close upfront encounter. Barns Green sitting fourth in the league, and having a game the previous weekend versus Worthing. The score line in the Barns Green v Worthing game(25-3) had the Lions thinking Saturdays game would not be all one way traffic.
The game started in normal fashion, Barns Green trying to bully the Lions into a boring slow game which did not suit Horsham in any way. With a solid defence, Horsham took everything Barns Green threw at them and counter attacked, with tries. Barns Green had very little to offer to the game, and it did end up a bit one way.
Now, I cannot remember who scored what try, as there were too many. I know Mark Elliott had a hat trick, Barber scored a nice one, and many other players got on the score sheet . Highlight was Passfields effort with a breakaway try showing his opposite number a clean pair of heals to cross the line.Guilty, maybe of a touch of ‘showboating’ by one or two Horsham players, all in all a great performance which simply out classed the opposition in every aspect of the game.
The final score was 70-0, this could have been triple figures. Man of the Match Ciaran Fitzgerald.
We move on to next week, with a cup match I believe against Heathfield. Selection this week will be interesting, as good quality players are pushing for a First XV shirt and wanting to join in with the Lions more and more. Get training, get your availabilities in early, join in the fun!
