Horsham Lions hosted the league leaders Worthing, at the Coolhurst ground. It was anticipated to be an epic battle, and didnt fail to deliver.
Worthing were first to strike, with a well worked move and a converted try was awarded. 7-0 to Worthing. The game was very evenly matched between the sides, and possesion was rocking back and fourth for long periods of play.
The Lions, not to be out done by Worthing had to respond. A half break from Mark Elliott (c), saw a surge to the line and the ball put into touch. Quick thinking from the Horsham Hooker saw Jake Lowe take a quick throw in to the hands of Steve Penston who took the try. It was unconverted, 7-5 to Worthing.
Worthing had a penalty awarded for a Horsham infringment and the score line went to 10-5 to the visitors.
The Lions 'true grit' was starting to show, with a massive effort a push for the line was 'on'. While a forward movement saw Horsham go down the left hand side of the paddock on mass, Worthing had left their right flank exposed, Jo Wilde had spotted it, and delivered a cross field kick into the hands of Jake Lowe who crossed the line for a try. 10 -10. The try was converted. 12 -10 To the Lions!
With 10 minutes left on the clock, the older heads in the side started to show the youngsters how to run down the clock. After much hard work, the Lions ended the game victorious and went to the bar for a well earned beer!
No doubt this was the biggest game so far this season against a very strong opposition, but we roll on to next week.
The Club Captain said, 'I am so proud of the boys today, the future for Horsham Rugby Club is looking very bright indeed!'
The whole team should be very proud of themselves for what they have achieved on the field of dreams.
