After much deliberation over selection this week and struggling to pull together a front row on Thursday evening, Tim 'magic feet' Wills stepped forward and was pulled back into the pride, along with Joe 'morgan' Freeman to shore up the front five.
The initial contacts and good play was from the Sussex Police, surging for the line with their large pack, the Lions defence was firm and denied the Old Bill crossing the line. After twenty minutes of defence, the Lions fitness and level heads dug them out of their 22m and more into the oppositions 3rd of the pitch. A missed penalty from both teams still left them at stalemate. Good running lines from Lions, Martin Tomlinson, Steve 'tram' Penston and Tom 'stalwart' Gravett. Penston had to leave the field due to an injury, and the Lions welcomed Jordan Smith to the field, who started straight away with a clean catch from our own kick off and surprising the Police.
After possession switching between both teams equally, the dead lock was broken with a penalty right in front of the sticks, Josh Chalk stepped up and slotted it with ease. 3-0 to the Lions.
The second half involved the Lions in a better position on the pitch, most of the time in the Police half. With the Lions lineout working well, how they didn't come away with a try was amazing, the frustration set in and the Lions started to lose patience. The Sussex Police powerful Centre kept trying to break the line, but was continuously being cut down by his opposite number Lion Luke Mortell.
The Sussex Police moved forward, and had good momentum but was discarded by their prop, who instead of taking the ball into Tim'magic feet'Wills take the tackle and reset, decided to have a cheeky chip over but straight into the waiting hands of Mark 'sharkey' Elliott who then switched the play into a more offensive mode.
Then, finally, the Lions crossed the line in the right corner with the winger Dave 'praters boy' Barber much to the Lions relief!
A well fought win, and the Lions character shone through for a 'gutsy' win, well done boys!!!!!!
