Horsham's decade long hold on the cup comes to an end

BOB ROGERS SUSSEX CUP FINAL
Saturday 2nd September 2023
Horsham Lions 22 – 37 Eastbourne 1st XV
Report by Matt Stone

Horsham, September 2, 2023 - Horsham Lions gave it their all in the Bob Rogers Cup Final on Saturday, but despite their valiant efforts, they came up short against a formidable Eastbourne side, losing 22-37. The match was a thrilling display of rugby prowess, with standout performances from several key players.

George Howard, showcasing his incredible skills in the midfield, was a standout player for the Horsham Lions, making some powerful carries and contributing significantly to their attack. Ed Mannhardt, at fullback, proved elusive and shone in his role as a key player in the Lions' defensive strategies as well as some sharp hands and pace in attack. Codie Reid, who was dangerous with the ball in hand, made a memorable impact looking dangerous in with ball in hand.

Horsham Lions' scores included a penalty try from a powerful Lions lineout to which Eastbourne's pack could not stop leaving the referee no choice but to award to the 7 points to Horsham, an exhilarating moment when Codie Reid finished off a fine blindside attack, securing his first-ever senior try, and Luke Powell's charging try from close range. These moments of brilliance, however, were not enough to secure victory as Eastbourne capitalized on their robust bench to secure the Cup.

Coach Matt Stone, reflecting on the match, commented, "It wasn't our day today. We started well and should probably have been 20 points clear after 20 minutes, but the stoppage in play for an injured player cost us, and we lost our way a little. We have a young squad with plenty to work with, and I have no doubt that we will come back stronger. Congratulations to Eastbourne; they took their opportunities today and got the job done."

Horsham Lions may have fallen short in the Bob Rogers Cup Final, but their performance was a testament to their resilience and determination. With a promising young squad and the guidance of Coaching team at Horsham RUFC, the future looks bright for the team as they continue to strive for success in their season and League campaign that starts this Saturday away at Sutton & Epsom.
