In the only game postponed in the entire league, it transpired that the Folkestone captain spoke to the referee a few hours before kick-off, whilst Horsham were already en route, advising that there was little point in him leaving his home in Eastbourne because he did not believe the pitch would be playable due to rain. Meanwhile, conditions cleared and Folkestone played Maidstone in a lower league match on an adjacent pitch.
This sets a dangerous precedent if the home side can start calling off games without the referee and the away side being given the opportunity to inspect the pitch, and calls into question whether this is perhaps because the playing conditions do not suit the strengths of a side, or simply have players unavailable and a weakened team.
Clearly the proper procedures were not followed and the decision of the RFU is awaited to see whether any sanction is applied to Folkestone for this administrative error.
