Horsham maintained their 100% record at the top of London 3 South East in a 37-5 victory at home to south London side Beccehamians, in a much changed side from last week with six changes in the back line alone.

The game was played in front of a large crowd of 130 who were also attracted by a fundraising launch party to help Horsham Rugby Club Kick Cancer Into Touch in partnership with Cancer Research UK.

It was however a disappointing performance against a side propping up the table, despite scoring five tries and securing their third successive bonus point win.

Afterwards Horsham head coach Nick Stocker said: “I was disappointed with our level of intensity and control. Credit to Beccehamians for a spirited performance which belied their league position. We allowed them to build self-belief, which was helped by them scoring a dubious try, and made life difficult for us.

We had a lack of clarity and cohesion, and despite disruption from injuries this was our worst performance of the season. We just didn’t click and should have scored a lot more tries.

Jamie Gibbs is my man of the match, Aled Price kicked well and Will Bell did a great job filling in at scrum-half. Indeed I am delighted that we have played and won all three games without a recognised nine.

After our experience last week, we have worked in training on our driving maul and on defending driving mauls which both went well.”

Price slotted a couple of early penalties as the Horsham front row exerted pressure on the Beccehamians scrum but the Green and Whites were pegged back after 14 minutes by a quick tap penalty which lead to a controversial try when the opposition winger appeared to have stepped into touch.

Ryan Grover then scored from a well executed driving maul, and minutes later the backs showed that they too could threaten the scoreboard when Price fired out a long pass to Gibbs who took the ball at pace to pierce the Beccehamians three quarter line and off load to Lee Taylor but he ran out of space before he could reach the try line.

Number 8 Ben Pirt then scored a classic pushover try from a five yard scrum which was the last score of the half.

With Horsham well set for a big score, the side then went off the boil for the middle third of the game, which was exacerbated by a succession of injuries notably to captain Paul Talbot.

A lack of control of possession and protection at the base of the scrum, together with a failure to be clinical and finish two against one situations saw the game meander with Horsham apparently believing the game was already won, until the Green and Whites awoke from their stupor and fine handling followed by a perfectly weighted grubber kick from Matt Goodsir saw Gibbs win the chase to score.

A delayed pass from Price and a fine line being run by Gibbs, put him through the gap to outpace the defence to score and then in the final minute Rob Grantham-Hill crossed the line to seal the victory.

Horsham’s next league game is away to Ashford on Saturday October 5.

Horsham: Talbot (Stone 35), Grantham-Hill, Barber; Grover, Whiting; N Bell, Smith, Pirt (Clegg 40); W Bell, Price; Taylor, Ordidge, Gibbs, Brooker (Rice 60); Goodsir
