Having spent 2 seasons at level 5 of the rugby pyramid, the challenges of playing semi pro rugby with a homegrown team finally took its toll. Relegation to Level 6 was confirmed on the final day despite a number of close results over the season that could easily have seen us remain at level 5. The need to build solid foundations following two seasons of player change means our return to level 6 now offers the opportunity kick on with the team's development. Our return, specifically to Regional 2 SE sees us playing familiar teams last seen during our promotion season in 2022/23. With undoubted confidence gained from performing consistently throughout the time at Regional 1, and with retention of 90% of our young playing squad, morale in the camp is high. Couple this with some excellent new recruits with experience of playing National League Rugby, we aim to meet the new seasons challenges head on whilst having some fun along the way.
The core tenets of Horsham's mobile pack and exciting backline are retained and we will continue to target the free scoring style for which Horsham has become known. Indeed with some serious firepower coming back into the team following long term injuries, the season ahead looks exciting. We have worked hard at our game over the course of the last few seasons and will continue to evolve this. Coupled with the benefit of the AGP, we aim to continue to progress the development of pace in our game - something that pleases both player and spectator alike. Renewal of rivalries with the likes of Beckenham, Old Reigatians and Old Colfeians will be joined by visits to new opponents Sutton & Epsom, Sidcup and Canterbury. Local interest is found in the Sussex derby with Brighton who likewise take up their spot in Regional 2. A glance of last seasons table will show clearly that Beckenham, Sidcup, Canterbury and S&E will be pushing for promotion, and of course Brighton will be looking to return to level 5 at the first opportunity. For our part, the plan is simply to build the team on and off field to put the foundations in place such that any future return to level 5 is maintained. As such, we aim to have a say in who will ultimately achieve the single promotion spot by being competitive across every fixture. Whatever the outcome, the strength in the league is clear and we are sure to see a highly competitive league throughout.
Training is on Tuesday and Thursday nights between 19:30 - 21:00 . All our sessions focus on individual player development and are game related with the aims of developing all abilities. New players are most welcome. We are known for investing in youth as evidenced by the number of 19-21 year olds playing 1st team rugby and developing into excellent players. Following a re-shuffle of the coaching team, Rich Tredgett steps up as Head Coach and he is supported by former Harlequins, Exeter and Worcester professional Josh Drauniniu who will be looking after our attack, skills and backs. Having retired from playing, Nick Bell assumes the role as assistant coach working alongside Rich with a focus on breakdown, defence and scrum. Together with Nick Stocker, who remains as Head of Rugby, our coaching team is Level 3 qualified, has played in the upper echelons of league rugby and achieve the balance of performance level rugby whilst retaining the ethos of what makes community rugby special. Supported by best in class video analysis, a highly experienced medical team, and an excellent management structure off field, our players all enjoy the experience and camaraderie of playing for Horsham. If you are an ambitious player looking to join a great team culture and ambitious squad, with excellent facilities we would look forward to welcoming you to the team.
