After a disjointed journey to Aylesford, our ladies gathered in the somewhat lacking away changing rooms.
A slightly delayed kick-offf saw Horsham take the lead with sweet handling to our usual full back, this week playing at outside centre, Georgia Pearce. Her pace simply outclassed the defence. Converted by another player playing out of position, Georgia’s centre partner, but usual openside “Shawn” Ansell.
Aylesford struck back with direct driving from their sizeable forwards, their game plan simple but effective. Horsham backs broke again with ‘The Spaniard’, Penny Moreno Gonzalez, latching on to a clever kick through, seemingly scoring but adjudged to have double moved, a glimpse of what was to unfold from the man with the whistle.
Another fine handling move from Horsham put our right wing Maddie Luxmore clear to score under the posts, ably converted by “Shawn”.
A period of attrition broke out, Aylesford’s forwards drew Horsham into a game they were briefed to avoid. After two very quick, and dubious, yellow cards, Georgia broke free to score under the posts, as flowing rugby briefly glimmered from Horsham.
Half time came, 12-21 to the visitors.
The second half commenced on a pitch that could and would have allowed a spectacle of clean, running rugby, had it not been stymied by the whistle bearer.
Georgia claimed a further 2 tries, with Ellie “2 steps” Birch enduring a relative drought by her standards and only claiming one try this week.
Not the best day at the office but an away win was taken and was worked hard for, needlessly so at times, but nobody can fault the heart & effort this womens team brings to the pitch every time they play.
