Its 2 out of 2 for the U18 Girls

Horsham travelled to Maidenhead on Sunday. We were met with a warm welcome and a kind offer to lend players, as Horsham again only had 14 to start.
The rain then started to bucket it down but thankfully for Maidenhead’s AGP the game could still be the fast running game we hoped for.
From Kick off both teams looked to attack. Maidenhead scrum was very dominate and Horsham found themselves on the back foot but Horsham defence was up to the task. After a quick turn over from Shay Spice, a big run from Mimi Clifford and Chloe Cochlin, Olivia Beckett reached out and scored the first try of the day. With no designated kicker for the day, Horsham management decided that try scorers would take the extras attempted. Good attempt but the try extras weren’t added on this occasion.
From the restart, Horsham were on the attack again setting up the ball near the midfield and an elusive Millie Smith broke 3 tackles and ran in from 60m to score under the posts. Millie refused the conversion attempt. Emily Darch stepped up and slotted the extras.
Maidenhead was then on the attack; some great hands gave their wing a great position where she beat 4 Horsham defenders to finish near the posts. They added the extras to make it 12-7.
This kickstarted the Horsham players, some strong runs from Ella McDonagh and distribution from Florrie Drew set up Mimi Clifford to beat 3 players with a strong run up the middle and then dived over near the corner. The extras were missed to make the score 17-7 at the end of the 1st third.
At the start of the 2nd third, Horsham were quickly on the attack again, setting the first of Poppy’s three tries for the day. Conversion was again missed.
Horsham’s next attack was then thwarted by some incredible defence from Maidenhead, forcing a knock on close to the line. From the resulting scrum, a strong carry from the Maidenhead 8, who was stopped by Shay Spice, who then popped back to her feet winning the turnover, she then beat 3 players to score. The extras were missed.
Some good play and ball retention from Maidenhead, unfortunately lead to nothing, because of a great turn over from Chloe Cochlin.
The ball was spun wide and Sophie Read drew the wing to pass inside to Smith, who ran in another 50m to score by the posts. Darch added the extras. The pressure from Horsham continued to heighten, and Maidenhead did very well to hold out. The referee gave a penalty to Horsham 5 metres from Maidenhead line. Darch took the quick penalty and spun the ball to Mimi Clifford who powered over. Darch had got her eye in with the extras again.
Maidenhead had a period of very good pressure and only due to some last ditch defending from Horsham prevented Maidenhead from scoring. This 5 mins of constant pressure was relieved by a turn over from Niya Spice, the ball spun to Mimi Clifford, who ran 60 metres beating a number of players. The ball was recycled and swung to the touchline, and an incredibly timed pass from Graceanne Claffey to put in Flo Hill in for her first try in her first ever game of rugby. Flo was then mobbed by the entire team to celebrate her achievement. Conversion was then missed from the touchline.
From the kick off, Emily Darch kicked the ball long, chased the ball kicked on. The covering defence from Maidenhead did amazingly well to get back and stop the try but it was only seconds as Niya Spice turned over the ball on the 5 metre line and dived over the line to score. Extras were missed.
Horsham were on the attack again and some great interplay from Izzy Dunn, Olivia, Ella and the Spices combined to put in Poppy for her second try of the day. With the final play of the game, Horsham pushed for another try and 7 phases later, Poppy smashed over from 15m out. The extras were added kindly by the Maidenhead player that was playing for us at the time, which wasn’t enjoyed by her players but appreciated by Horsham.
Maidenhead voted Chloe Cochlin the player of the match with mentions of the Spices in the backrow tackling everything that moved, Emily and Florrie for their distribution and Mimi Clifford for her performance at 10.
Thank you for Maidenhead and Reading for a great game and being such great hosts. Next match is against Medway at Home on the 1st October.
