Amazing Backdrop for a Great game of Rugby

There aren’t many teams that have a backdrop quite like Teddington, set in a royal park with deer wandering around under the trees, cyclists, dogs and absolutely no parking or signs for visiting rugby teams.
Would Horsham be able to back up our continuing progress since the start season, in Henry the 8th’s back yard?
The game started very closely – a contest , where both teams meant business from the first whistle. Horsham's pressure at the break down, soon cause Teddington to concede a penalty. The resulting line out was our first excursion into the 22 and a “double D” lineout move saw Dion making it to the 5 metre line. A quick clear out from the forwards, ball through the hands from the backs and a score in the other corner. What a start!
Despite Teddington’s larger pack, the more mobile Horsham forwards were matching Teddington in the set piece and edging it in the loose play. This allowed the backs to show what they can do when the spread the ball wide – which they did to great effect.
When the centres George and Jack received good quick ball, their powerful running and quick handling saw another try shortly after with Scott dancing his way round players and scoring under the posts. An easy conversion followed, 14-0 and looking good.
Teddington then woke up and seemed to have more structure to their play - but a high work rate and pressure from every Horsham player kept Teddington held at bay.
With Teddington in the ascendancy, we struggled a bit with the line out, but the scrum and defensive effort was outstanding from the whole team. Having soaked the pressure up for what seemed an eternity, Adam’s powerful straight running in the Teddington 22 allowed him to break through 4 players and force himself over to score.
The coaches used the rolling sub’s almost exclusively for the flankers in the first half, giving numerous players the chance to get involved in the tight stuff – no one failed to front up.
The score line continued to build in our favour – this was a credit to the continue pressure going forward.
In the second half confidence was so high that, after Will Day injured himself scoring under the posts, scrum half Callum moved in to play number 8. The coaches would have it that he was easier to lift in the lineout………………………. but his tenacity helped drive the forwards, maintaining the pressure stopping Teddington from coming back into the game.
Man if the Match, Marc Burgess then came in at hooker - the first time he has played the position. His first job was to catch an overthrown lineout ball, then take a tackle by both the Teddington second row’s - he set the ball, in come the cavalry to clear out the ruck and then got up smiling like a loon. Quality!
All this and no points conceded, so an excellent team performance.
Numerous players tried a few new positions which was really good to see, this is an important part of developing the whole player – something we are aiming at this season.
In terms of personal performances, there really were too many to mention. Marc Burgess playing his best game to date and actually enjoyed it at hooker. Tom Edevane getting stuck in and first to the ball whenever he could, Mark Wint peeling off the scrum as flanker and looking for work………….to name but a few.
A great team effort in Henry’s right royal back garden.
Tries from George, Scott 2, Henry, Adam, Fraser, Will.
Kicking duties shared conversion Henry 3, George, Ben 2. Final score Horsham win 0-47.
