Wind, sun and a shampoo related compliment which didn't go down well

It's been a while since we played following weather cancellations so it was good to see fantastic availabillity for the game. This allows everyone the chance to get some game time and hopefully wet the appetite for future games.

I managed to win the toss and decided a little pensivly to go with the wind in the first half, knowing how sometimes it can be hard to build enough of a lead. Crawley had by all accounts got to the game very early and were looking quite slick doing their lineout moves, an area which could prove important on a windy day.

Before the game we observed a minutes silence for former Crawley President Eddie (Chalkie) Quigley. People like Eddie are the essence of grass roots rugby and it was an honour to join in the tribute.

The game started at a good tempo and considering the conditions the play was quite neat. Horsham quickly established dominance in the scrums and the first points came from a well controlled push over scrum. Soon after some neat play was finished well out wide by Ben Carbone before another scrum was taken against the head and driven over the line. Chris Mallows completed the scoring in the half with a deserved dot down following multiple phases. Crawley continued to show good spirit and were soon on the scoreboard following some strong running and Horsham indiscipline.

The second half seemed to last a long time, Crawley old boys Tony Parsons and Luke offered to help them out as Crawley lost a couple of guys to injury. Crawley were unbowed and were soon within touching distance on the scoreboard, however Horsham's large bench was starting to tell as they looked increasing stronger as the game went on. Final score 45-14, including trys by Richard Tredgett, another by Ben Carbone and a 40 metre run in by Ed Cresswell. Sorry if I've missed you out of this!

To sum up a good game against Crawley played in good spirit. There was a minor kerfuffle when Pirty complimented the opposition full back on his nice smelling shampoo along with a little kiss but the referee handled the incident very well. There were strong performances across the park including (but there were others!) Toby, Pirty, Mike Drew, Guy and Luke (for both teams!). The Motm award went to Ben Carbone for his determination to cross the line for his two scores. Thanks to all the 1st teamers who braved the wind and cheered us on from the sidelines, and Richard Harman for taking some pictures which I've nicked - Green Army!

Things were finalised later on with typical BB's social incorporating a tasty curry and one or two beers.

No league game next week for us, but not sure if it's Cup. We're going to go for some training I think on Thursday!
