Writing match reports on Sunday evening is often a challenge.

Writing match reports on Sunday evening is often a challenge. You have the normal match fog, then a few too many beers after and lastly that thing that comes with age when all the games start to blur into one. It’s much worse when you’ve lost.

So as always here is how I remembered things and looking on the bright side, I don’t have to remember any Horsham scorers.

The match started well for Horsham, although being shunted back over ourselves in the first scrum wasn’t ideal but more on that later. It was quite an intense start but Horsham did fashion the first chance for points with a penalty in front of the posts which was dragged agonisingly wide. Barns Green (BG) did get on the scoreboard first with a try from a driven line out but perhaps an indication of the game and the importance of the result was despite another opportunity to do the same from a later penalty they opted to kick. BG’s scrum dominance had lasted for one scrum and thank fully everyone was spared the high fiving and back slapping as the scrums were soon edging in Horsham 3’s favour and in one particular scrum I’m sure the BG pack were calling out 1-2-1-2 as they were edged backward. Finally there was a hint of strategy present when the scrums went uncontested in the second half because BG couldn’t get another one of their heftier forwards to do a turn in the front row, I’m sure this wouldn’t have occurred if BG had remained on top in this area.

The all-important first score of the second half was denied to Horsham when Sharkey seemed to win the race to his chip and grubber. The referee wasn’t sure and instead of giving the benefit of doubt to the attacking side decided to favour the talkative men in gold. Unfortunately for Horsham 3’s this effort also dislocated his shoulder and he could play no further part.

Barns Green finished the match with a flurry of scores to give the final result a slightly flattering tone. BG fully deserved their win but on another day if a few things had gone for the home side the contest may have lasted a little longer.
It was another well contested game between the two local sides and played largely in the right way. There was a bit of slapping but as the entertaining referee put it ‘I’ll have no slappers on my pitch’. It must be said that the referee fully played his part in the game entertaining everyone with his clear instruction.

So what next for Horsham 3’s? Well we could do a little better with a functioning lineout I’m sure and a little consistency in selection. We have another disruptive break for the World Cup Final pre-empted I’m sure by the RFU’s delusion perhaps that England would be in it. So let’s try and stay Rugby tuned in and we’ll have another crack at it in a couple of weeks. Lastly congratulations to Sharkey and Ade Parsons on their 10’s shirts, Otto Carlisle for his MOTM and Ed Wraith for his 3rd team debut. Also apologies to Gumbo, I was sure the surrender sign you gave me meant you were in no rush to come on ;) (don’t worry it still counts towards your polo shirt!).

Oh yes I almost forgot, the final score was 0 – 31.
