East Grinstead used their powerful and experienced pack to try to gain dominance in the early stages of the game. A very physical encounter from both sides, but the Lions struck the first blow. The try came from Jake Lowe who intercepted a tap down from a line out and finished off the 30 meter sprint in style.
Grinstead then used their solid scrum and after much pressure scored a push over try to the right of the posts.
This was then overshadowed by an injury to the East Grinstead Lock. After a tackle from Joe Emson and Ryan O'Gorman together on the number five, he took a nasty bit of damage to his leg and was carried off the field. We wish him a speedy recovery.
After a small pause, the game continued in the same tempo two very evenly matched sides. A penalty was awarded to Horsham and was slotted by Jake Gates. East Grinstead then spent around 20 minutes trying to cross the Lions try line, but with no points to be gained through the Green defence, after a penalty being awarded Grinstead opted for the posts. The score was level a 10 points a piece.
Once again the visitors were gunning for the Lions try line and again the defence held firm and a break was made by Horsham and the ball was moved wide to Gates, who showed good pace and went outside his opposite number. Gates made the hard yards and offloaded to his supporting player, which came in the shape of Matt Stone who scored under the posts. With the dying minutes of the game Horsham showed great character and spirit.
The final score 10-18 to the Lions!
Captain Adam Harman said, 'East Grinstead are a good side and I am very pleased with everyones effort today, and it shows that a good defence can win games'
