Two of our promising Under 15’s and 16’s, Max Wright and Ben Murphy, recently attended a training session run by the England Coaching Team.

They were nominated by Dayle Kirby and Jeremy Allen, and the session run by Stuart Lancaster, Mike Catt and Graham Rowntree took place at the University of Nottingham with the opportunity provided by BMW through our sponsorship from Vines of Gatwick.

Max’s mum Linda said, “It was a good day, not quite what we expected but enjoyable none the less. We were told the whole day would be non-contact with some touch games in the afternoon. Max got stuck in to the morning training sessions which were led by the England Community Coaches who were very good. The groups were mixed ages and not once during the day were they separated into forwards and backs. The feeling I got was that they wanted the boys to play as a team, as equals without separating them or putting labels and expectations on them. The morning sessions taught things like space awareness, holding formation in attack and defence, using the full width of the pitch, how to deal with overlaps, etc. Just before lunch Mike Catt and Graham Rowntree turned up and got involved in the session.

After lunch there was a Q and A session which was held by someone who played for Leicester. We didn't catch his name! Stuart Lancaster joined the other coaches and it was mostly about the England team and the World Cup. Some interesting things were said though about Academies not being vital and how hard work and fitness is everything and will get you further than anything else. You'll be interested to hear that Lancaster agrees with your philosophy about developing the squad as a whole and how at this age the score shouldn't matter. The team should focus on their ability, fitness and leadership, etc. not on winning at all costs. A win will be the consequence of all aspects of the team working well. Controversial!

After lunch they were given their shirts and had the chance of getting signatures. The last hour was spent playing little touch games with the England coaches watching and commenting. Max enjoyed this the most as it got quite physical towards the end. He became very vocal and confident and scored 4 tries in the last match. Lancaster gave a closing speech and we headed for the M1.

It was an interesting day for all and has done wonders for Max's confidence. Many thanks again for giving him this opportunity.”
