Coaches Comments

Welcome to the Horsham U15s web page and a new season with a whole lot of new challenges to be met.  We had a good season last season only missing out on promotion to the A league by one result (that game v. Worthing will take a lot to get over!).  So we are in the Sussex B league and are looking forward to strong competitive season.

The challenge for the squad this season will be to maintain the high standards of last season and try to go that one step further and into the A league.  However we want to do so making sure the boys continue to enjoy their rugby, enjoy the squad spirit and learn new skills on and off the field.  Sussex ‘B’ will be very strong this year and we have a huge challenge ahead, however we are all looking forward to this and I am sure that both the players and the coaching team are going learn a lot this season, and have fun doing so.

We currently have a squad of about 27 players, boosted this year by ½ dozen new recruits – welcome to our squad and it is good to see them all.  However we are always looking for new players and would welcome any interested player who will be in school year 10 from September 2009.

All our League and Friendly games are played on Sunday mornings, with kick-off being 11:00 (unless by mutual agreement) and Wednesday evenings 6.30 – 8.00.  We already have a full and interesting fixture list for both the squads.

We strive to play the game competitively, fairly and within the spirit of the game – we welcome the support of all our parents who help throughout the season and try to make Rugby a positive experience for everyone.

If you would like to know more please free to contact me as above.

u14 Season Summary

Coaches Corner

Training

All training is at the Horsham club.  Whenever we do not have a fixture there will be training at Horsham on Sunday 10:00-12:00.
However, due the large number of fixtures this season, our main trainin
g session is mid-week.
Mid-week training is on Wednesday 18:30-20:00.

  Essential equipment:
Boots & Trainers Training shoes are generally worn for warm-up games, dynamic stretches & fitness work.
Boots are required post-warm-up
Mouth guard  Anyone forgetting their mouth guard isn't covered by insurance & therefore cannot take part in contact work
Layers Training tops are recommended, if not essential, for all training sessions.  You can always take a layer off!
[During the colder months of the season plenty of layers including leggings should be worn.]
Fluids Whatever the weather, regular hydration is essential to player performance.  By the time you feel thirsty it is already too late - you are de-hydrated.  De-hydration's first affect is poor decision making, shortly followed by reduced muscle power & slower recovery.  So don’t forget a drink!

Finally, a request to help look after our club:
Please ensure that you collect all your belongings, including empty bottles [for re-cycling at home] before leaving.

Development

Attendance at training is key to developing team & unit play, as well as improving an individuals set of skills.  As such, training attendance is logged & feeds into team selection.

Fitness, specific to rugby, is an essential element of training, as it is a key component of individual performance.

Laws

The laws of rugby union are constantly evolving to improve the flow, spectacle & safety of the game.  Knowledge of the laws & their interpretation will both improve your game & keep your team on the right side of the referee.

Useful sources of information are:

New Players

We are always looking to build our squad, acquiring & developing new players, whether seasoned or novice.
If interested in joining the U15s - contact James.

Information that novice players, & their parents/guardians, might find useful are:

 Fixtures & Results
All Fixtures

For all fixtures [unless otherwise stated] kick-off is at 11:00.
Players should:

  • by 10:00, arrive, be in training gear & check-in with the coaches
  • by 10:00, complete player specific warm-ups
  • at 10:00, commence squad warm-up
  • wear No.1's [shirt, club tie & trousers] after the match at all venues

Check out the fixtures page for all matches [friendly, league & tour].

The majority of fixtures contain links to the opposition websites & for away matches to a map.
If these links are missing, the Sussex RFU's website club page, contains details for rugby clubs in Sussex including location, maps & websites.

Match Day Policies
Fixtures League Friendly
Attendance We hope that all our players will attend the match & play an active part, whether on the pitch or not.
Everyone is welcome to take part in the, near hour long warm-up.
If you are there, warmed-up & league registered you are available to cover late dropouts; injuries can occur right up until kick-off.
Support from the sidelines will not only help your team but also your development; as all players can learn game awareness skills from watching.
All players are expected to attend.
Selection

Selection for the league squad & starting 15 is influenced by:

  • attendance at training
  • aptitude
  • attitude when playing & training
  • technical ability
  • physical safety

Playing

A first 15 will be selected to start the game.
Changes will only be made for tactical, injury or performance reasons.
This could mean that you play no part in the game despite being selected in the league squad.
[Our
league playing policy has operated since leagues started at U13.]

These matches are viewed as development opportunities.
A
s such all players are given game time; even if this is in a development role rather than their normal positions.

League

Horsham U15s are in the Sussex "B" division of the Sussex RFU U15s League for the 2009-2010 season; as we finished runners up in last season’s Sussex West league.

The Sussex RFU U15's & U16's League 2009-2010 provides fixtures & results and league table information for all three U15 league divisions.
[Note:  If the last two seasons are anything to go by, there may be a significant delay before this site is updated.]

Results & Reports
Match results, reports & when available, photos, will be posted on this web site as soon as practically possible.

All contributions welcomed – photos of matches and/or training, input to match reports – just pass on to James.
There are several bins around the pitches & club house, so please dispose/recycle your drinks bottles.
