General Introduction

What is Mini Rugby

Mini rugby is the form of rugby played in England by children under twelve. It is in fact a number of carefully graduated sets of playing rules that will lead a child, year by year, into full 15-a-side rugby as an Under 13, equipped with the skills and knowledge to play the game successfully and safely.

What Age Can You Start

We have boys and girls as young as 5 training with the Under 7’s age group, but you can join in at any age with confidence that proper coaching will be given to you child to enable them to join in and play safely.

Boys And Girls?

Mini Rugby is most definitely a mixed game. Girls can compete successfully alongside boys, and women’s rugby is growing in popularity year by year so there is plenty of opportunity for the future.

Isn't Rugby Too Rough for Children

In the 6-8 year old age groups there is little or no physical contact, and no tackling, with the emphasis on developing running and passing skills, which are the foundations of the game.

From 9 onwards the coaches introduce tackling, scrummaging and line outs progressively and under strict control, so that children are not exposed to physical pressure that they cannot understand or cope with. Qualified coaches supervise the sessions to ensure that our number one priority—safety—is achieved.

A game of rugby in full flow is an exciting and physically demanding experience, but it should never be violent or un-controlled. The rules are framed to provide physical contact with the minimum risk of injury and coaches and referees are very quick to stop play if an unsafe situation occurs or it is necessary to caution an over zealous individual.

What About Kit

Children will need rugby (or football) boots, a gum shield, shorts and club socks, and they can buy club shirts and training kit. Match shirts are provided for games against other clubs and Festivals. You will not need any special kit until your child has had the opportunity to attend a few times, and decide that he or she wants to continue.

What Do You Do Now

Come along to the club on any Sunday, from 10:00am onwards to see what is happening. September is a training only month, before matches start in October. There will always be a welcome if you make yourself known to someone.
